Butler Fuels have been delivering heating oil for your home, plus gas oil and diesel for your business since 1943

Here you'll find helpful domestic heating oil advice.

Q. How can I avoid running out of fuel?

Unlike gas and electricity, it’s your responsibility to make sure that you have  a consistent and reliable supply of fuel to heat your home. With our Planned Delivery service you can enjoy complete peace of mind, knowing your tank will be topped up.  We will monitor the level of heating oil in your tank and automatically arrange deliveries for you when you’re running low. It’s easy, convenient and you don’t even need to call us.

Q. Do I have to use the Planned Delivery Service?

No, if you prefer, you can monitor and manage your own supply. You’ll need to check the level of oil in your tank regularly and place your order in advance of your desired delivery date. This is especially important when you’re likely to be using more heating oil, such as during winter and around Christmas, as delivery times are likely to be longer.

If you have a manual sight gauge on your domestic oil tank, make sure that the gauge is kept closed as much as possible and is only opened when you are actually reading the level of oil.

If the sight gauge is open, oil could escape through it, debris could cause contamination and it could also be a security risk.

Q. What fuels do you supply?

At Butler Fuels, we deliver kerosene, gas oil, diesel and Glowmax.

Q. What is Glowmax?

Glowmax is our premium heating oil. Glowmax contains an additive that stabilises the fuel, keeping it fresher for longer. Developed to help protect your whole heating system, it is a cleaner burning fuel. It also reduces carbon and sludge build-up which, in turn, helps to improve the overall efficiency of the boiler.

Q. What do I need to know about my tank?

If you’re new to domestic heating oil, it’s a good idea to find out more about your oil storage tank, for instance:

  •  which type of domestic heating oil you use;
  •  the capacity of your oil storage tank;
  •  where the gauge is on your oil storage tank;
  •  if your tank has been inspected in the last 12 months by an OFTEC Registered Technician;
  •  the material your oil storage tank is made from – it could be steel or plastic;
  •  if your oil storage tank needs to be bunded (have secondary containment); and
  •  if the base of your oil storage tank is properly supported.

OFTEC, the Federation of Petroleum Suppliers and the Environment Agency have produced a useful guide to looking after a domestic oil storage tank and avoiding pollution from your fuel oil. It covers a variety of areas including the types of oil tank available, fittings, regulations, security, tank maintenance and health and safety. If you would like any more information or advice, please either call us on 0345 609 8856 or follow these links:

Q. What do I need to do before I make an order?

When you are ready to place an order for your fuel:

  •  confirm which domestic heating oil product you would like, either Kerosene, Gas Oil or Glowmax / Premium Kerosene;
  •  make a note of how much you would like, in litres (minimum order is 500 litres); and
  •  have a debit or credit card with you.

If you’re a new customer, we ask that you pay for all of your oil up front, or pay half up front and the rest by our Direct Debit payment plan. You can find out more about Payment Options here.

Q. What happens during delivery?

Before delivering any fuel, we’ll run through a short questionnaire to check that it is safe to deliver to you. For example, we can’t deliver to sites where our driver would need to take the hose through the house, or where there are loose animals.

We’ll discuss delivery timescales with you, and you can request a phone call, e-mail or text message for the day before we deliver your fuel. If your oil storage tank is outside and easily accessible, then there is no need for you to be at home for the delivery.

When you receive your delivery of heating oil, you’ll receive a delivery note, which will confirm the type of fuel and the exact amount our driver has delivered.
